Sun Nov 02 03:45:07 UTC 2025: US and China Agree to Military Communication Channels After Trump-Xi Summit
Following a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the United States and China have agreed to establish military-to-military communication channels aimed at de-escalating potential conflicts. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the agreement after a phone call with his Chinese counterpart, Minister of National Defense Dong Jun.
The decision follows a period of heightened tensions between the two nations, including close encounters between their militaries in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. Communication channels between the two countries have been limited in recent years, particularly after then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022 prompted China to cut off contact.
Experts have long advocated for direct military contacts as a crucial means of preventing unintentional escalation. Hegseth and Dong agreed that “peace, stability, and good relations” are in the best interest of both countries. The meeting between Trump and Xi in South Korea also saw progress on trade, with Trump easing tariff rates on Chinese goods.
While this agreement is a positive step, experts note that crisis management channels remain absent, underscoring the need for further dialogue to mitigate the risk of escalation between the two global powers.
