Paris, France – Two more individuals have been formally charged in connection with the audacious daytime heist at the Louvre Museum last month, where thieves made off with an estimated $102 million worth of priceless Napoleonic-era jewelry.

The Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced on Saturday that a 37-year-old man faces charges of theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy, while a 38-year-old woman is accused of being an accomplice. Both suspects, arrested earlier this week, have denied any involvement in the brazen robbery. The male suspect, known to authorities for prior theft offenses, has been placed in pre-trial detention. The female suspect’s lawyer stated his client is “devastated” and disputes the accusations.

These latest charges bring the total number of individuals arrested in connection to the case to seven. Five people were arrested on Wednesday, but three have since been released without charge. Of the initial two suspects arrested, one was identified by DNA at the scene, and the other was an unlicensed taxi driver.

The heist, which took place last month, saw thieves wielding power tools brazenly raid the Louvre in broad daylight. The stolen loot, which includes an emerald-and-diamond necklace given by Napoleon I to his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise, and a diadem studded with nearly 2,000 diamonds that once belonged to Empress Eugenie, remains missing. The thieves did drop a diamond- and emerald-studded crown that once belonged to Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, as they escaped.

Following the theft, the Louvre’s director admitted the museum’s security failed to detect the thieves quickly enough and offered her resignation, which was rejected. The investigation continues as authorities attempt to recover the stolen jewelry and uncover the full extent of the organized gang’s operation.
