Hollywood, CA – Pete Davidson, 31, is undergoing a dramatic transformation, undergoing a costly and excruciating tattoo-removal journey. The comedian and former Saturday Night Live star has spent nearly $200,000 (£152,000) to erase approximately 200 tattoos, a decision driven by a desire to shed reminders of his past struggles and simplify his burgeoning acting career.
Davidson, known for his extensive ink, began the process in 2020, citing a desire to move beyond a troubled period marked by addiction and depression. “I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person,” Davidson told Variety, “and when I look in the mirror, I don’t want the reminder of ‘Oh yeah, you were a f**ing drug addict.'”
The removal process, which involves repeated laser treatments, has proven to be intensely painful, described by Davidson as “a 10 out of 10” on the pain scale and comparing the sensation to “putting your arm on a grill and burning off a layer of your skin.”
Beyond personal reasons, Davidson also revealed that his increasing acting roles necessitated the removal of the tattoos. Makeup teams were reportedly spending hours covering his extensive ink before each shoot, creating logistical challenges.
While the process is far from over – Davidson estimates he is only 30% finished – fans have already noticed significant changes. Recent photos show a dramatic fading of the tattoos on his arms and neck.
However, not all the ink is disappearing. Davidson has confirmed that he’s keeping a few sentimental tattoos, including one dedicated to his mother, Amy Davidson, and another honoring his late father, a New York firefighter who died in the 9/11 attacks. His father’s FDNY badge number will remain permanently inked on his arm. He will also be keeping his Hillary Clinton tattoo.
“Hillary’s staying. I love Hillary,” Davidson said.
The comedian’s candor about his tattoo removal journey highlights the complex relationship between body art, personal history, and professional demands in Hollywood. He is currently sober and focused on a new chapter of his life.
