“Vape! The Grease Parody” Reimagines Classic Musical for a Woke Generation

NEW YORK, NY – Get ready to ditch the hot rods and cigarettes for Priuses and vape pens! “Vape! The Grease Parody” is electrifying audiences off-Broadway with a hilarious, updated take on the iconic 1978 musical, “Grease.” Running now at Theater 555 on West 42nd Street until January 4th, the show satirizes the original film’s dated themes and brings the Rydell High gang into the 21st century with a woke twist.

“It brought out so many of the extremes that we see in the movie and reminded me of how ridiculous ‘Grease’ really is,” says Scott Silagy, who plays Danny, in the parody.

The Pink Ladies are now the Pink Squad, reflecting a more inclusive era. Danny and Kenickie explore their sexual fluidity, and Sandy, played by Lara Strong, questions the problematic ending of the original. “I’ve decided that Danny just doesn’t appreciate me for who I am,” Sandy says in the new musical, turning away from the makeover seen in the original.

Director Jack Plotnick explains, “Teens have traded their cigs for vape pens, hot rods for hybrids, and making out to well, making out.”

The parody doesn’t shy away from poking fun at the age of the original cast, who were noticeably older than high school students. The opening number, “Vape is the Word,” includes the line “This school is stupid and the guys are gross, but we’ve been here so long, our veins are varicose.”

“Vape! The Grease Parody” also tackles modern dating with nods to Tinder, OnlyFans, and the ever-present issue of gaslighting. The updated version features songs like “Hopelessly Gaslighted by You,” replacing the original’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” Even Kenickie is embracing consent, declaring, “As a planet-loving gent, I’ll be getting mad consent” during the song “Green Lightnin.'”

Don’t miss this hilarious and thought-provoking reimagining of a classic! Get your tickets now for “Vape! The Grease Parody” at Theater 555.
