Mumbai to Host Inaugural Climate Week Focused on Global South Solutions
Mumbai, October 29, 2025 – Maharashtra will be the site of India’s first citizen-led platform aimed at accelerating climate action with the arrival of the inaugural Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) in February 2026. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the initiative today, stating that the event aims to bring together climate experts from across the Global South to develop practical and localized solutions to climate challenges.
“This platform will help developing nations work together and make their voices heard on the global stage,” Fadnavis said. “They will come to Mumbai to create a practical climate action plan, working with city leaders, State Chief Ministers, civil society groups, corporates, students, and young people.”
The week-long event, organized by Project Mumbai in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, is expected to draw representatives from over 30 countries. Shishir Joshi, founder and CEO of Project Mumbai, explained the rationale behind focusing on the Global South. “Globally, we have seen this phenomenon in the Global North…We see that the climate action has been happening in the Global South. So, we thought it was important to highlight India’s role and leadership.”
MCW will center around three interconnected themes: food systems, energy transition, and urban resilience. These themes will be explored through the perspectives of justice, innovation, and funding, ensuring that both climate adaptation and mitigation strategies are addressed.
Organizers emphasize the importance of incorporating diverse voices into the conversation, including citizens and grassroots initiatives. The event will also feature discussions on topics such as mental health, art, spirituality, sports, and cinema, as well as a climate-focused food festival to engage the public.
Several prominent organizations, including The Climate Group (hosts of New York Climate Week), India Climate Collaborative, WRI, Eversource, and UNICEF, are partnering with the Maharashtra government and Project Mumbai for the event. A formal request has been submitted to the Prime Minister of India to inaugurate the inaugural Mumbai Climate Week.
