Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju Bids Farewell to Delhi High Court Amidst Transfer Controversy

New Delhi, India – Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju delivered an emotional farewell speech at the Delhi High Court on Monday, before commencing her new role at the Karnataka High Court. Her transfer, alongside Justice Arun Monga’s move to the Rajasthan High Court, has stirred controversy and opposition from the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) and women lawyers.

In her speech, Justice Ganju expressed deep gratitude to her family for their unwavering support, highlighting the sacrifices required of a judge’s family. Overcome with emotion upon seeing her daughter in tears, she whispered, “If you cry, I will cry. Don’t cry,” before continuing her address.

She emphasized the judiciary’s role as a guardian of constitutional principles, stating, “It is our solemn duty to ensure that the law remains a shield for the weak and not a sword for the powerful.” She also stressed the importance of integrity, independence, and transparency in maintaining public confidence in the institution.

Justice Ganju, who was appointed to the Delhi High Court in May 2022, thanked the Bar for their cooperation, adding, “If I was ever firm in the court, it was only in the larger interest of maintaining decorum and discipline that this noble institution demands.” She advised young lawyers to uphold discipline, humility, and patience, emphasizing fairness and dignity in their practice.

Justice Arun Monga, also transferred from the Delhi High Court, echoed similar sentiments, stating that a judge’s true voice lies in the reasoning, restraint, and reflection found within their judgments.
