Cyclone Montha Batters Chittoor District, Disrupting Normal Life
Chittoor, India – October 28, 2025 – Cyclone Montha brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the eastern mandals of Nagari, Vijayapuram, and Nindra in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, today, disrupting normal life and raising concerns about agricultural damage.
The region experienced over 20 mm of rainfall by Tuesday evening, leading to waterlogging in several villages and overflowing streams. Roads were submerged, and low-lying areas were inundated, particularly in the Nagari division. Farmers are concerned about potential damage to freshly sown Rabi crops as heavy runoff from the Nagari hills entered agricultural fields.
The Keelapattu bridge in Nagari suffered damage due to the floodwaters, prompting authorities to erect barricades and divert traffic. Police and Irrigation officials are closely monitoring the situation. Six relief teams have been deployed to maintain round-the-clock vigil as a fresh spell of rain is expected overnight.
Over 50 irrigation tanks across the three mandals received heavy inflows, leading officials to release excess water into nearby streams. Sandbags have been strategically placed at vulnerable tank bunds to prevent breaches. The Krishnarajapuram reservoir in Karvetinagaram mandal is reportedly overflowing, having done so seven times this month. Water is being released downstream in a controlled manner to mitigate the risk of breaches.
Chittoor Special Officer P.S. Girisha and Collector Sumit Kumar inspected the Krishnapuram reservoir and the Keelapattu bridge, urging local authorities to remain vigilant for potential flash floods. “We are reviewing the situation every few hours. People should remain indoors until the rain eases,” stated Collector Sumit Kumar.
Officials anticipate the cyclone’s impact to continue until Wednesday afternoon. Power disruptions have been reported in scattered locations. Revenue officials have been instructed to prepare a relief shelter in Nagari in anticipation of continued heavy rains.
