CENTRAL FLORIDA – Communities across Central Florida are grappling with the aftermath of intense rainfall that triggered widespread flooding, road closures, and evacuations Sunday and Monday. Lake, Brevard, Orange, Seminole counties are among the hardest hit, with significant infrastructure damage and ongoing recovery efforts underway.

Lake County declared a local state of emergency and activated its Emergency Operations Center. Mount Dora, in Lake County, experienced some of the most severe flooding, with reports of collapsed roads, including a significant section of Donnelly Street, impacting all downtown businesses. Authorities evacuated approximately 20 homes in Waterman Village due to dangerous ravine erosion, and expect to take a year to address all road and infrastructure issues. Police Chief Michael Gibson said downtown remains open for business and that officials are working on a new road into downtown.

Brevard County also declared a state of emergency, with Titusville particularly impacted. Residents in some neighborhoods found themselves wading through several feet of water, with cars submerged and businesses flooded. Emergency crews conducted water rescues, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded roadways.

In Cocoa, road closures were reported due to washouts and flooding, disrupting traffic flow. Seminole County Emergency Management opened a sandbag site at the Old Geneva Volunteer Fire Station, urging residents to bring their own shovels.

Schools in both Lake and Brevard counties remain open, with excused absences granted to students unable to reach campuses due to flooding.

The Red Cross is on the ground, assessing the damage in Brevard and Lake counties and providing emergency assistance to affected residents. Lake County officials encourage residents to report home or property damage at 352-253-9999 to aid in damage assessment and resource allocation.
