Vikings’ Carson Wentz Out for Season with Shoulder Injury, McCarthy Returns
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation has taken another turn as veteran Carson Wentz will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported the news, confirming Wentz has been placed on injured reserve.
Wentz, who made five starts in relief of injured starter J.J. McCarthy, played through significant pain in his non-throwing shoulder for over half of those games. The injury occurred during the first half of the Vikings’ Week 5 victory over the Cleveland Browns in London, where he remarkably led a game-winning drive despite the pain. He then tried to play through it after the bye week. Ultimately, the injury proved too much, with Wentz visibly struggling in last week’s 37-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
With Wentz sidelined, McCarthy is expected to return to the lineup for this week’s game against the Detroit Lions. Backing him up will be undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who moves up to the No. 2 spot. Brosmer, formerly the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Gophers, has appeared in three games, completing 5 of 8 passes for 42 yards.
Wentz’s injury is a blow to the Vikings, who are currently 3-4 and in last place in the NFC North. He managed to win two of his first three starts, offering a glimmer of hope while McCarthy recovered from a high-ankle sprain sustained in Week 2. Now, the team’s hopes rest on McCarthy’s shoulders as they look to turn their season around.
