Alex Rodriguez Admits Giving Young Patrick Mahomes Bad Career Advice
New York, NY – October 27, 2024 – Former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez revealed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that he once advised a young Patrick Mahomes to prioritize baseball over football, a piece of advice he’s now happy the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback ignored.
Rodriguez, appearing on the show Sunday, recalled his time as teammates with Patrick Mahomes Sr. on the Texas Rangers in 2001. He recounted meeting the younger Mahomes, then around 10 years old, who frequently asked him for career advice.
“He was a baseball star and a football star,” Rodriguez said, describing Mahomes’ talent in both sports. “So, I said, ‘Alright, Patrick, I’m gonna give you some good advice here… I know you like baseball, and I know you like football, but trust me when I say this – baseball is where the money is. Football’s just for fun, but you’re gonna make your money in baseball like your dad and I.'” The audience erupted in laughter at this revelation.
Of course, Mahomes chose football, a decision that has led him to become one of the NFL’s biggest stars. He was drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and has since won three Super Bowls, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and numerous other accolades.
Mahomes, a talented baseball shortstop and pitcher in his youth, played two seasons at Texas Tech before focusing solely on football.
Rodriguez, reflecting on his misjudgment, joked, “I’m glad he didn’t take my advice!”
