DHAKA, Bangladesh – Bangladesh secured a resounding ODI series victory against the West Indies, ending a four-series losing streak, thanks to a dominant batting performance led by Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan. The opening pair forged a massive 176-run partnership, setting the stage for a comfortable win in the deciding match.
Sarkar, who fell just short of a century with 91 runs, praised his partner Saif Hassan for his resilience and skill, especially considering he was battling a cold and fever. “He batted really well. His shot selections were very good, and whenever he was facing difficulties, he continuously communicated. He was also facing breathing issues. So the way he batted and survived, we should actually give him his credits,” Sarkar told T-sports.
Saif Hassan, who contributed a valuable 80, expressed his gratitude to Sarkar for his guidance during the innings. “Dada (Soumya) was helping me a lot today. I was suffering from a fever and a cold for three days… I always feel comfortable with Dada to bat.” While admitting to a slight regret about missing out on a century, he emphasized the importance of contributing to the team’s victory.
The turning track at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium proved challenging for both sides in the earlier matches, but Sarkar’s aggressive approach, including effective use of the reverse sweep, allowed Bangladesh to build a substantial total of 296 for 8. Sarkar dismissed any personal disappointment over missing his century, highlighting the significance of the partnership and the team’s overall success. “The main thing is that I could contribute to the team and the team has won, and this is the main thing,” he stated.
Saif Hassan attributed their success to a positive mindset and attacking intent. “The pitch was the same [as the previous matches], but we tried to bat having positive intentions, [and it made the difference],” he said. This mindset proved crucial on the spin-friendly wicket, where the previous match had seen a record-breaking 50 overs dominated by spin.
Sarkar, who finished the series with 140 runs at an average of 46.37, learned from the heartbreak of the previous match, where Bangladesh lost in a Super Over, and came out firing in the decider, ensuring a well-deserved series victory for the hosts.
