Doncic Erupts, Breaks Lakers Scoring Record in First Two Games
LOS ANGELES – Luka Doncic is off to a scorching start with the Los Angeles Lakers, rewriting franchise history with a phenomenal scoring display in the first two games of the season. The five-time All-Star has exploded for a combined 92 points, shattering Jerry West’s previous record of 81 points set in 1969.
Doncic dropped 43 points in the Lakers’ opening game against the Golden State Warriors and followed it up with a dominant 49-point performance in Friday’s victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. His 92-point tally ranks fourth all-time in NBA history for points scored in the first two games of a season, surpassing even Michael Jordan.
“It’s felt great,” Doncic said after the win against the Timberwolves. “We should have won the first game, but obviously it’s a good comeback. Minnesota is a great team. We had to do a lot to win today. But myself, I feel great. Just trying to win every game.”
While Doncic has been a consistent scoring threat since entering the league in 2018, this early-season explosion is especially noteworthy. He last had consecutive 40-point games in February and his overall playmaking has been top notch. He also had a two game stretch of 73 points earlier that same season.
The Lakers are currently without LeBron James, who is sidelined with sciatica. James is expected to return in mid-November, giving Doncic the opportunity to lead the team in his absence.
Despite facing intense defensive pressure without James on the court, Doncic has thrived. In addition to his scoring prowess, he has also contributed with 23 rebounds and 17 assists in the two games.
Doncic’s dominant performances have not only energized the Lakers but also sent a clear message to the league that he is ready to lead the team to championship contention.
