Chennai Poised to Become Global Events Hub with New Convention Centre
CHENNAI, INDIA – October 27, 2025 – Tamil Nadu is on track to elevate its status as a premier destination for international events with the Kalaignar International Convention Centre slated for completion in February 2026. Public Works Minister E.V. Velu inspected the ongoing construction in Muttukadu earlier today, reaffirming the state’s commitment to this flagship initiative.
The ₹525-crore project, initiated in May, will result in a sprawling convention center spanning 37.99 acres. The complex boasts a 2.08 lakh sq. ft. plinth area designed to accommodate large-scale conferences and events. Key features include a massive 91,924 sq. ft. exhibition hall capable of hosting 10,000 people, a 5,000-seat convention hall, and a 1,500-seat auditorium. Dedicated dining facilities and extensive parking space for 1,638 cars and 1,700 motorcycles are also planned.
“Once completed, the convention centre will establish a global identity for Tamil Nadu,” stated Mr. Velu. The project is aimed at attracting big-ticket events to Chennai, boosting the local economy, and enhancing the state’s visibility on the world stage.
