Istanbul, Turkiye – The Gaza Tribunal, an unofficial body established in London, has issued its final verdict, stating that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and demanding accountability for “Israeli perpetrators and their Western enablers.” The tribunal, which concluded four days of public hearings in Istanbul, Turkiye, on Sunday, delivered its “moral judgement” following a year-long process of gathering information, hearing from witnesses and survivors, and archiving evidence.
Presided over by Richard Falk, a former UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, the tribunal condemned the mass destruction of residential properties, the deliberate denial of food to civilians, torture, and the targeting of journalists as key elements of the alleged genocide.
The tribunal accused Western governments, particularly the United States, of complicity through the provision of diplomatic support, weapons, intelligence, military assistance, training, and continued economic relations. It also criticized post-war plans proposed by former US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, arguing they fail to uphold Palestinian rights under international law.
The tribunal recommended the suspension of Israel from international organizations like the UN and called for those responsible for the alleged genocide to be held accountable and made to provide reparations. “Palestinians must lead the restoration of Gaza, and Israel and its enablers must be held responsible for all reparations,” the tribunal stated.
While acknowledging that it is not a court of law and does not determine guilt or liability, the tribunal framed its findings as a crucial civil society response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “We believe that genocide must be named and documented and that impunity feeds continuing violence throughout the globe,” the jurors explained.
The tribunal’s findings come as Israel faces genocide accusations brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In an interim ruling in January 2024, the ICJ found it “plausible” that Israel is violating the 1948 UN Genocide Convention. Israel has repeatedly denied the accusations.
