Sun Oct 26 16:40:00 UTC 2025: Everton’s Set-Piece Woes Lead to Tottenham Defeat, Laments Moyes
LIVERPOOL – Everton manager David Moyes expressed his disappointment following a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, citing his team’s failure to defend set-pieces as the primary reason for the loss. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Moyes acknowledged Tottenham’s strength in this area, stating, “It wasn’t a 3-0, but it ended up 3-0 because we didn’t defend our set pieces well enough. Give Spurs credit, they are good at them.”
Ironically, the Toffees entered the match as the only Premier League team yet to concede from a set-piece (excluding penalties) this season. However, they conceded twice from corners, a rare occurrence. This marks the first time since December 2023 that Everton has conceded twice from corners in the same Premier League game, further highlighting the unexpected nature of their defensive struggles.
Moyes also addressed a controversial VAR decision that ruled out an Everton goal for offside. “Since I have seen it, I agree it was offside,” he conceded. “If it had been the other way around I would be claiming it was an offside goal so I think they got it right.”
Despite the scoreline, Moyes emphasized his team’s positive play, noting the Tottenham goalkeeper’s exceptional performance. “I thought we did a lot of positive things, but it wasn’t a positive result, which is what we were after,” he said. “Their keeper was probably their best player, dealt with corners incredibly well. We played some good stuff but could not get the goal we needed.”
