Aspinall Faces Gane with Heavy Realities, Eyes Potential White House Bout

LAS VEGAS, NV – Undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is preparing to defend his title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on Saturday night, acknowledging the inherent dangers of the sport and the gravity of putting his “life on the line” in the Octagon.

In an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson, Aspinall spoke candidly about the risks involved in mixed martial arts. “Essentially, you’re putting your life on the line in front of millions of people. That might sound a bit extreme, but bad things can happen in there,” he said. “I don’t want to die in the cage. I definitely don’t want to. But it’s a dangerous sport. The idea is to hurt the other person.”

Aspinall (8-1 in UFC), who secured the title after Jon Jones’ retirement in June, faces former interim champion Gane in his first title defense. Despite not dethroning a reigning champion, the British fighter is seen by many as the dominant force in the heavyweight division, boasting a remarkable finishing record and the shortest average fight time in UFC history.

While acknowledging he may not yet be “the face” of the sport, Aspinall expressed pride in his ascent to the top. He also addressed the possibility of participating in a UFC event on the White House lawn, proposed by former president Donald Trump. Aspinall stated he would eagerly accept the opportunity. “If it was offered to me, yeah. Absolutely I would. I’d fight anywhere in the world,” he said. “If I’m still the champion by then, whoever the number one contender is, that’s who I’ll fight.”

As UFC 321 approaches, Aspinall remains focused on the challenge ahead. “As my emotions are building up, I have to like, try and calm myself down a little bit and be like ‘Listen, I just need to be on before 11 o’clock on Saturday,'” he explained. “Until then I need to try and relax.”

The fight between Aspinall and Gane is expected to be a highlight of UFC 321, taking place this Saturday Night.
