Sudan Conflict Intensifies: RSF Attacks Besieged Cities as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Khartoum, Sudan – Fighting has escalated sharply in Sudan as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched attacks on the cities of el-Fasher in North Darfur and Bara in North Kordofan, raising grave concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis.
The RSF attacked Bara on Saturday, drawing artillery fire from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), according to a military source. The assault cut off communications in the city. Clashes also continued in el-Fasher, with residents reporting heavy shelling and gunfire. The RSF claimed to have seized the North Darfur governor’s residence and were positioned near the SAF’s command center, according to the Sudan Tribune.
The renewed violence comes as medical workers warn of a catastrophic humanitarian situation, particularly in el-Fasher. Dr. Razan Al-Mahdi of the Sudan Doctors Network stated that the crisis has “surpassed all comprehension,” with children dying daily from malnutrition and lack of medical resources.
Four UN agencies warned that thousands of children face imminent death, as over 250,000 civilians, half of them children, remain cut off from food and healthcare due to the ongoing siege of el-Fasher. Health facilities have reportedly collapsed, leaving severely malnourished children without treatment. Save the Children reported that at least 17 children were killed and 22 wounded in el-Fasher in October alone.
The conflict has also seen a rise in drone strikes targeting civilian infrastructure. The RSF has repeatedly targeted Khartoum International Airport, postponing its planned reopening.
The war, which began in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced 12 million people, and left 30 million in need of aid.
Recent efforts to mediate peace have been complicated. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied reports of indirect talks between the SAF and RSF. Despite promises to intensify efforts to end the war in Sudan, recent US foreign policy shifts may delay progress on a ceasefire.
