Yadgir to Get Smart Traffic System to Combat Congestion and Crime
Yadgir, October 26, 2025: Yadgir district is set to receive a significant upgrade to its traffic management system with the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The project, funded by a ₹2.40 crore grant from the state government, aims to optimize traffic flow, improve road safety, and reduce congestion across the district.
Superintendent of Police Pruthvik Shankar announced the initiative, stating that the ITMS will be installed in key locations, including Yadgir city, Shahapur city, Shorapur city, and Bheemarayanagudi. Each installation will cost approximately ₹25 lakh.
The ITMS will employ advanced technologies, including high-definition CCTV cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, Vehicle Speed Detection Systems (VSDS), cat eyes, and digital signboards. These tools will enable the system to automatically detect and record traffic violations such as unorganized parking, rash riding, triple riding, wrong-way driving, and speeding. Violators will receive notifications via SMS to the mobile number registered to their vehicle.
“This advanced system leverages artificial intelligence, sensors, and data analytics to ensure systematic traffic movement and improve overall road safety,” said Mr. Shankar.
Beyond traffic management, the police department also plans to bolster security at district and inter-state borders. CCTV cameras will be installed at 14 check-posts connecting Yadgir to neighboring districts like Kalaburagi and Vijayapura in Karnataka and Narayanpet in Telangana.
“The operation of CCTV cameras will help curb illegal activities across the border,” Mr. Shankar explained.
In the interim, the police continue to manually inspect vehicles. Recent efforts have resulted in fines issued in 750 instances of traffic violations, including cell phone use while driving, triple riding, and speeding. A ₹500 fine is being levied for cell phone use, and minors driving have been fined ₹25,000 each in three separate cases.
