Minneapolis, MN – It was a night of mixed fortunes for Gopher athletics as three teams faced tough competition on Friday. The No. 3 Gophers women’s hockey team secured a dominant 4-0 victory over No. 4 Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, while the No. 20 volleyball team notched its first win against a ranked opponent this season, defeating No. 23 Indiana. However, the No. 12 Gophers men’s hockey team suffered a 3-0 shutout loss at home against No. 18 Minnesota Duluth.

Ava Lindsey led the charge for the women’s hockey team, scoring two second-period goals and extending the team’s unbeaten streak against the Bulldogs to 14 games. Goalie Hannah Clark recorded her second shutout of the season with 24 saves. The Gophers women continued their series against UMD on Saturday.

The volleyball team, led by Julia Hanson’s 17 kills and a stellar .441 hitting percentage, defeated Indiana in four sets (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19). This victory marks the Gophers’ 15th consecutive win against the Hoosiers and propels them further in the Big Ten standings.

Meanwhile, the men’s hockey team struggled against a strong UMD squad. Goals from Daniel Shlaine and Zam Plante in the first period, coupled with a third-period goal from Grayden Siepmann, sealed the victory for the Bulldogs. Gophers coach Bob Motzko expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance, stating, “We played a really good first four minutes, but the next 56 were not very good for us.” The Gophers were shut out for the first time in 104 games. They looked to bounce back in the second game of the series on Saturday.
