BOSTON – VJ Edgecombe announced his arrival to the NBA in spectacular fashion Wednesday night, scoring a stunning 34 points in his debut for the Philadelphia 76ers, leading them to a nail-biting 117-116 victory over the Boston Celtics. The performance ranks as the third-highest scoring debut in NBA history, trailing only legends Wilt Chamberlain (43 points) and Frank Selvy (35 points).
The rookie guard, fresh off a stellar season at Baylor where he was named Big 12 Rookie of the Year, showcased remarkable composure and skill, going 13-of-26 from the field and 5-for-13 from beyond the arc. Edgecombe also added 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal to his impressive stat line.
“I worked every day, and all my life, for moments like this,” Edgecombe said after the game, visibly emotional. “This is my dream. I prayed for this…that surpassed my expectation, to be honest.”
Edgecombe’s impact was immediate, scoring 14 points in the first quarter alone – the most ever by a player in their first NBA quarter, surpassing LeBron James’ previous record. He also sparked a Sixers comeback in the fourth, scoring nine crucial points as Philadelphia erased a 13-point deficit.
“That’s an amazing first-game performance. It really is,” said Sixers coach Nick Nurse. “That’s a neat list to get on.”
Edgecombe’s stellar performance didn’t overshadow All-Star teammate Tyrese Maxey, who led all scorers with 40 points. Their combined 74 points mark the second-highest scoring duo in a season opener in NBA history.
Despite the incredible performance, Edgecombe remained grounded, expressing his desire for a long and successful career. “It feels good to have my name mentioned with LeBron,” he said. “But hopefully [I’m] going to have a long career ahead of me. That’s what mattered most, man: longevity.”
Even Maxey poked fun at Edgecombe for missing 2 free throws at the end of the game. “Hey, [No.] 77. You definitely a little nervous at the free throw line”
VJ Edgecombe’s debut has Sixers fans buzzing and the league on notice. He and the Sixers play again Friday in Toronto.
