Blue Jays Manage Bichette’s Load After Extended Absence, But He Remains Key Weapon
TORONTO – Bo Bichette, recently activated for the World Series after a seven-week absence due to a knee sprain, is being carefully managed by the Toronto Blue Jays as they navigate the Fall Classic. After contributing in Friday night’s 11-4 Game 1 victory over the Dodgers, where he went 1-for-2 with a walk before being pinch-ran for, Bichette was held out of the starting lineup for Game 2 on Saturday.
Manager John Schneider confirmed this was the anticipated plan, acknowledging Bichette isn’t yet at 100% but remains a valuable asset. Despite not starting, Schneider emphasized that Bichette will be available off the bench, ready to hit or pinch-run depending on the situation.
In Game 1, Bichette made his debut at second base, a position he hadn’t played since a single minor league game in 2019. He impressed with his defensive play, notably a highlight-reel stop against Teoscar Hernández. Teammate Ernie Clement lauded Bichette’s natural instincts and athleticism. However, Bichette did show some discomfort.
The Blue Jays believe the switch to second base will ease the strain on Bichette’s knee and allow him to focus on his offensive contributions, which were evident in Game 1. Schneider indicated that after a scheduled day off, Bichette is expected to start Game 3 and potentially play a full nine innings.
