CHENNAI – A Chennai-based orthodontist, Dr. A.V. Arun, has earned a Guinness World Record for his extraordinary collection of approximately 5,800 still photography cameras. What began as a flea market find in 1997 – a twin-lens reflex camera – has evolved into a lifelong passion and a unique museum in Kovalam showcasing an extensive range of film cameras.

Dr. Arun meticulously balances his dental practice with his passion for collecting, stating, “Practicing dentistry is simply essential. It helps me run my life and sustain it. However, what makes it worth living is always my passion.” His collection spans rare Polaroid models, box cameras, folding cameras, and miniature cameras, sourced from flea markets around the world during his dentistry conferences.

“Once, in Australia, I picked up about 40 cameras for a throwaway price,” he says. “So, you will find pieces in the museum from all the crannies of the world.”

While not an avid photographer himself – citing the decline in film development – Dr. Arun dedicates his free time to cleaning, researching, and even repairing his cameras, sometimes until the early hours of the morning.
