Sat Oct 25 11:40:34 UTC 2025: Headline: Russian Strikes Kill Civilians in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk as Allies Tighten Sanctions on Moscow
Kyiv, Ukraine – At least four people have been killed and several others wounded in a barrage of Russian missile and drone attacks targeting Kyiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine, local officials reported Saturday. The attacks come as Ukraine’s Western allies ramp up sanctions against Russia in an effort to cripple Moscow’s war economy as the conflict nears its four-year mark.
In Kyiv, two people were killed and nine wounded after a ballistic missile attack struck the capital overnight, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration. Emergency services reported a fire in a non-residential building and damage to nearby buildings from falling debris.
The Dnipropetrovsk region in central-east Ukraine was also heavily hit, with acting Governor Vladyslav Haivanenko reporting two fatalities and seven injuries. Apartment buildings, private homes, a shop, and vehicles were damaged in the strikes. Tragically, one of the victims was an emergency worker killed in a repeated missile strike, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia launched nine Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 62 attack drones, claiming to have downed four missiles and 50 drones.
Russia has not yet commented on the strikes, but has accused Ukraine of attacking a dam in the Belgorod region, leading to potential flooding and prompting evacuations. Russia’s Ministry of Defence claims to have intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones over Russia overnight.
The attacks coincide with intensified economic pressure on Russia from Western allies. The United States and the European Union recently announced sweeping new sanctions targeting Russian energy firms, including Rosneft and Lukoil, and banning liquefied natural gas imports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the sanctions and reiterated the need for further pressure on Russian oil companies and increased military aid, particularly long-range missile capabilities. He emphasized the urgent need for air defense systems like the Patriot to protect Ukrainian cities.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Western sanctions as an “unfriendly act” and insisted that Russia will not be pressured into making decisions. Putin has reiterated his demands for Ukraine’s complete disarmament and the retention of territories seized during the war, positions deemed non-negotiable by Ukraine. Attempts to broker a ceasefire along current front lines have failed.
Despite the ongoing conflict and disagreements, Putin’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev, expressed optimism that a diplomatic solution could be reached soon.
