Brampton Woman Killed in Parking Lot Shooting; Ex-Boyfriend Fatally Shot by Police After Amber Alert
BRAMPTON, ON – A Brampton woman was shot and killed Tuesday in a parking lot. Police have identified the victim as 29-year-old Savannah Kulla. The suspected shooter, 38-year-old Anthony Deschepper, was fatally shot by Niagara Regional Police early Wednesday morning following an Amber Alert involving the couple’s 17-month-old daughter.
According to Peel Regional Police, the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Airport Road and Queen Street East in Brampton. Kulla was pronounced dead at the scene. Kulla’s mother, Karen Kulla, told Global News that her daughter was meeting Deschepper to allow him visitation with their child when the shooting occurred.
Karen Kulla shared her heartbreak, describing her daughter as “so, so beautiful” and revealing that Savannah had expressed fears about Deschepper’s potential for violence. “She did say to me, about a month ago, ‘if I stay with him he’s gonna end up killing me,'” Karen Kulla stated. She also alleges police told her the fatal shooting followed a dispute over a diaper bag.
An Amber Alert was issued just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, naming Deschepper as the suspect. The child was later found safe with family members, and the alert was cancelled. Niagara Regional Police were alerted to the Crystal Beach area as Deschepper was believed to be in the area, he left the area before police arrived.
Early Wednesday morning, Niagara police located Deschepper in a vehicle at a gas station in Niagara Falls. Following what police described as “an interaction with officers,” Deschepper was shot and killed. No officers were injured.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate to investigate the circumstances surrounding Deschepper’s death.
Further investigation has revealed that Deschepper was wanted on firearm-related charges from 2023 and was out on bail awaiting trial. Karen Kulla stated she asked Savannah if Deschepper had a gun to which Savannah had replied “No, Mom, I swear to you he doesn’t carry a gun, he doesn’t have a gun anymore.”.
Peel Regional Police and Niagara police are conducting parallel investigations into the interconnected incidents.
