Leeds United Pile on the Pressure for West Ham with 2-1 Victory
LEEDS, ENGLAND – [Date] – Leeds United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Elland Road on Saturday, deepening the woes for the London club. Early goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon set the stage for Leeds’ third Premier League win of the season.
Aaronson capitalized on a rebound in the third minute after Noah Okafor’s header was parried by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Rodon doubled the lead in the 15th minute, heading home a corner from Sean Longstaff.
West Ham substitute Mateus Fernandes scored a late consolation goal, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a point. The defeat extends West Ham’s winless league run to six games, leaving them in the bottom three.
“I’m worried since I arrived, so it’s not something that surprises me,” said West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who replaced Graham Potter in September. “We are worried, but we are committed and embrace the challenge that we have ahead — it’s a big one, a big, big one.”
Leeds climbed to 13th in the table with the win. Aaronson, who scored his first Premier League goal since August 2022, expressed his pride in his performance.
“I’ve been really working hard after training and stuff like that and last week I got a little unlucky with one but that’s how football is and you’ve just got to stick with it and I did that and I’m proud of myself,” Aaronson told Sky Sports.
The match was marked by injuries and VAR controversy, with West Ham’s Ollie Scarles forced off with a shoulder injury and a late offside flag denying Lucas Paquetá a goal. Former Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville received a booking for a late challenge on Longstaff.
