India Slams Pakistan at UN, Cites Protection of Terror Group as Evidence of UN’s “Gridlock”

New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar strongly criticized Pakistan’s actions at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), citing its attempts to shield the terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF), which claimed responsibility for the recent Pahalgam attack. Speaking at an event celebrating the UN’s 80th anniversary, Jaishankar argued that this incident highlights the urgent need for reforms within the global body, which he said has become “visibly gridlocked” and overly polarized.

Jaishankar pointedly condemned the equation of “victims and perpetrators of terrorism” in the name of global strategy, an apparent jab at the tendency to hyphenate India and Pakistan in discussions related to terrorism. He emphasized that when a UNSC member state, implicitly referring to Pakistan, actively protects an organization claiming responsibility for a barbaric attack, it severely undermines the credibility of multilateralism.

He lamented the obstruction of meaningful reforms within the UN and highlighted the growing challenges in maintaining international peace and security. He also noted the slowing progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda 2030, a significant concern for the Global South. Despite these challenges, Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining hope and continuing to support the UN, however flawed, in this time of crisis.
