Thu Oct 23 22:30:00 UTC 2025: Vikings Sticking with Wentz, Jones Could Return, McCarthy Still Sidelined

EAGAN, Minn. – The Minnesota Vikings will roll with Carson Wentz at quarterback for their Thursday night matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, Head Coach Kevin O’Connell announced Tuesday. Citing the short week and J.J. McCarthy’s ongoing recovery from a high ankle sprain, O’Connell stated that rookie Max Brosmer will continue as the backup. McCarthy will serve as the emergency No. 3 quarterback for a second consecutive week.

A potential boost for the Vikings offense could be the return of running back Aaron Jones. The team opened his 21-day practice window, with Jones potentially being activated from injured reserve in time for Thursday’s game. Jones has been sidelined since Week 2 with a hamstring injury. While Jordan Mason has stepped up as the primary rusher, the Vikings have felt Jones’ absence, especially in the passing game.

McCarthy underwent an on-field workout Tuesday, but the Vikings medical team ultimately determined he wasn’t ready to start. The team believes starting him prematurely could lead to reinjury. Coach O’Connell emphasized the importance of McCarthy regaining full mobility and pain-free reactionary movements within the pocket before returning to the field. The Vikings’ next game is November 2 at the Detroit Lions.

Wentz, who has a 2-2 record since stepping in for the injured McCarthy, is focused solely on the upcoming game against the Chargers. “My mindset is to go win this game,” Wentz said. “I don’t have a lot of time or energy to think beyond this one.”
