Jack Smith Requests Public Testimony Amid Scrutiny Over Trump Probe, GOP Senators’ Phone Records

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and role in the January 6th Capitol riot, has requested to testify in open, public hearings before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.

In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, Smith’s attorneys stated that he is prepared to answer questions about the Special Counsel’s investigation and prosecution, but seeks assurances from the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding federal grand jury secrecy requirements and access to Special Counsel files.

The request comes as Republican lawmakers, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, have increased their scrutiny of Smith’s work. Grassley and other Republican senators have demanded the release of documents related to Smith’s decision to subpoena telecommunications companies for the phone records of nearly a dozen GOP Senators during the January 6th probe.

Fox News Digital previously reported that Smith’s team tracked the private communications and phone calls of Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, Ron Johnson, and others as part of the “Arctic Frost” investigation. The FBI confirmed that Smith’s team was able to see which phone numbers the senators called, the location the phone call originated and the location where it was received.

Smith defends his actions, stating that the collection of toll data was “narrowly tailored” and “entirely proper” under Justice Department policy.

“Jack Smith certainly has a lot of answering to do, but first, Congress needs to have all the facts at its disposal,” Grassley told Fox News Digital. “Hearings should follow once the investigative foundation has been firmly set, which is why I’m actively working with the DOJ and FBI to collect all relevant records that Mr. Smith has had years to become familiar with.”

Chairman Jordan has yet to comment on Smith’s request for public testimony. The DOJ has not yet indicated whether it will grant Smith the necessary assurances for him to testify.
