Fri Oct 24 08:00:00 UTC 2025: Headline: Former Special Counsel Jack Smith Requests Public Testimony Amid Republican Scrutiny
Washington, D.C. – Former Special Counsel Jack Smith has formally requested to testify publicly before Congress regarding his investigations into Donald Trump, citing “mischaracterizations” surrounding his work. In a letter sent Thursday to the leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, Smith expressed his desire to appear “in open hearings” to address allegations of wrongdoing levied by Republican lawmakers.
Smith’s investigations led to criminal charges against Trump in 2023 for alleged mishandling of classified records and actions related to the 2020 election results.
However, Smith’s lawyers have stipulated that his testimony is contingent upon assurances from the Justice Department that he will not face reprisal for discussing matters still under seal or protected by grand jury secrecy rules. They have also requested access to the files created during his time as special counsel to ensure “full and accurate answers.”
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said that hearings should only follow once an “investigative foundation” has been firmly set.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has urged his colleagues to accept Smith’s offer, arguing it would allow the American people to judge the integrity of the investigations for themselves.
Potential public hearings would mark Smith’s most significant opportunity to publicly defend the integrity of the cases he brought against Trump.
Smith’s request comes in response to a demand for his testimony issued by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan on October 14th.
