Coimbatore Youth Arrested for AI-Powered Photo Morphing
Coimbatore, India – October 24, 2025 – A 24-year-old man in Coimbatore has been arrested by cybercrime police for using artificial intelligence (AI) to morph photos of a female colleague. P. Manikandan, an employee of a local automobile dealership, allegedly downloaded photos of the woman from her social media profile and used a readily available AI tool to alter them.
According to police reports, the woman filed a complaint after receiving one of the morphed images through a messaging app. Manikandan was charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
After being questioned on Thursday, Manikandan confessed to the crime. Police have seized his mobile phone, which was used to create the altered images. He was subsequently arrested and is now in judicial custody. Police confirmed that the morphed images were not circulated to anyone else. The case highlights the growing concerns surrounding the misuse of AI technology and its potential for harassment and abuse.
