FDA Warns of Serious Illness Risk in Expanded Egg Recall: Over 6 Million Eggs Affected

[City, State] – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers of a “reasonable probability” of serious illness related to a voluntary recall of over 6 million eggs initiated by Black Sheep Egg Company in September. The recall was triggered after environmental samples at the company’s Arkansas processing center tested positive for multiple strains of Salmonella, some known to cause human illness.

The FDA has classified the recall as Class 1, its highest severity level, indicating consumption of the affected eggs could lead to severe adverse health consequences or even death.

Consumers are urged to immediately check their refrigerators for potentially contaminated eggs and discard them.

Affected Products:

The following Black Sheep Egg Company products are subject to the recall if they have a “Best By” date between August 7th and October 31st, and a UPC code of 860010568507 or 860010568538:

  • Free Range Grade A Large Brown Eggs, 12-count cartons
  • Free Range Grade A Large Brown Eggs, 18-count cartons
  • Free Range Grade AA Large Brown Eggs, loose-packed in boxes
  • Free Range Grade AA Medium Brown Eggs, loose-packed in boxes
  • Free Range Grade AA Large Brown Eggs, loose open skid
  • Free Range Grade AA Medium Brown Eggs, loose open skid
  • Free Range Grade AA Large White Eggs, loose open skid
  • Free Range Grade AA Medium White Eggs, loose open skid
  • Free Range Grade AA Large White Eggs, 12-count cartons
  • Free Range Grade AA Medium White Eggs, 18-count cartons

In addition, Kenz Henz, a Texas-based company that receives eggs from Black Sheep Egg Company, is also issuing a voluntary recall of:

  • Grade AA Large Pasture Raised eggs, 12-count cartons with a “Best By” date between October 11th and October 17th and a UPC code of 86949400030.

Distribution Concerns:

While the source of the contamination has been identified as Black Sheep Egg Company’s Arkansas processing center, the company had already shipped products to other companies within Arkansas and Missouri. These eggs may have been repackaged and distributed to other states, potentially expanding the scope of the recall.

Symptoms and Precautions:

Salmonella infection symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food and last for four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe infections.

Consumers who believe they have developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Any surfaces, containers, or utensils that have come into contact with the recalled eggs should be thoroughly sanitized with hot, soapy water. Wash hands thoroughly after handling the eggs or cleaning affected areas.
