Thu Oct 23 00:15:00 UTC 2025: Summary:
The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) has received approval from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to proceed with a series of renewable energy projects. These include:
- A 1500 megawatt hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project across seven substations using tariff-based competitive bidding.
- A 30MW Grid-Connected Solar photovoltaic power Project with 30MW/90 megawatt hour BESS in Karur and Thiruvarur districts, also through tariff-based competitive bidding.
- A 34.75 MW hybrid renewable energy project combining 18.75 MW of wind and 16 MW of solar capacity in wind farm sites.
These projects will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, with specific durations for each project (15 and 25 years). TNERC has stipulated certain conditions for the tenders, including emphasizing bidder experience. The tariff adoption will be decided through separate petitions.

Tamil Nadu Greenlights Major Renewable Energy Push with Battery Storage Projects
CHENNAI, INDIA – October 23, 2025 – Tamil Nadu is set to significantly bolster its renewable energy capacity following regulatory approval for several ambitious projects. The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) has secured the green light from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to initiate tenders for a series of projects centered around integrating large-scale battery energy storage with renewable generation.
The most substantial of these is a massive 1500 megawatt hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, to be distributed across seven substations owned by Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (Tantransco). This initiative aims to provide 375 MW of power for 4 hours, cycling 1.5 times per day.
Further solidifying its commitment to solar energy, TNGECL will also launch a tender for a 30MW grid-connected solar photovoltaic project coupled with a 30MW/90 megawatt hour BESS in the districts of Karur and Thiruvarur.
In addition, a 34.75 MW hybrid renewable energy project is slated for development, combining 18.75 MW of wind and 16 MW of solar power at existing wind farm sites.
All projects will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. The BESS project has a duration of 15 years, and the solar BESS project will operate for 25 years.
“These projects represent a significant step forward in Tamil Nadu’s efforts to embrace clean energy and ensure a reliable power supply,” said a spokesperson for TNGECL.
TNERC has mandated that TNGECL emphasize the experience of potential bidders in the tender process. The final tariffs will be determined after the tendering process and will be subject to further approval from the commission. This investment underscores Tamil Nadu’s growing commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its role as a leader in India’s renewable energy transition.
