Nitish Kumar Reddy Receives ODI Debut Cap, Hailed as Future All-Format Star
Perth, Australia – Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has officially joined the Indian ODI squad, receiving his debut cap from former captain Rohit Sharma ahead of the first match against Australia at the Optus Stadium on Sunday. This marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old, who also made his Test debut at the same venue last November, coincidentally receiving his Test cap from Virat Kohli.
In a heartfelt speech revealed by the BCCI, Rohit Sharma expressed immense confidence in Reddy’s potential, stating, “I’m 110% sure that with that attitude you’re going to go a long way in this Indian team. You’re going to be an all format great.” Sharma emphasized the team’s full support for Reddy, acknowledging the player’s desire to contribute across all formats.
Reddy’s inclusion comes as India seeks to fill the void of a seam-bowling all-rounder since Hardik Pandya’s departure from the traditional format. His impressive performances in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy and the 2024 IPL season caught the eye of head coach Gautam Gambhir, who advocated for his quick integration into the national team.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has assured that Reddy will receive ample opportunities to prove his mettle. “The more he plays, the better he’s going to get. And we obviously have an eye on him,” Agarkar stated, highlighting Reddy’s potential to provide valuable flexibility and balance to the team’s composition.
Reddy’s journey reflects India’s commitment to nurturing young talent and building a versatile team for the future.
