Wed Oct 22 23:40:00 UTC 2025: Argentine and Ecuadorian Clubs Aim to Break Brazilian Dominance in Copa Libertadores

BUENOS AIRES/QUITO – For years, Brazilian clubs have reigned supreme in the CONMEBOL Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition. However, this year, Argentina’s Racing and Ecuador’s LDU are emerging as strong contenders to challenge that green-and-yellow dominance.

Racing faces a formidable opponent in Palmeiras in one of the semi-final legs, while LDU will battle it out against Flamengo in the other. Both teams have a history of success against Brazilian teams, offering hope for a shift in power.

LDU’s return to the semi-finals marks a significant milestone, their first in 17 years. In 2008, they shocked Fluminense to lift the trophy. This year, they topped their group stage which included Flamengo and eliminated defending champions Botafogo. Notably, LDU is coached by Brazilian Tiago Nunes, whose expertise in Brazilian football has been instrumental to their success, highlighted by a convincing victory over São Paulo in the quarter-finals.

Racing isn’t lagging behind, having won the Recopa Sudamericana earlier this year by defeating Botafogo twice. While Flamengo and Palmeiras boast significantly higher squad values, Racing and LDU are proving that financial disparity doesn’t always guarantee victory. They rely on tactical discipline and strong team identity.

LDU leverages their high-altitude home advantage, while Racing depends on Argentine passion.

The first leg of the semi-finals will see Flamengo hosting Racing, and Palmeiras travelling to Quito to face LDU.
