Thu Oct 23 09:30:00 UTC 2025: Indianapolis Woman Charged with Murder After Fatal Road Rage Incident Over Horn Honk
Indianapolis, IN – Deborah Benefiel, 23, of Indianapolis, faces murder and criminal recklessness charges after allegedly shooting and killing a 21-year-old man following a road rage incident sparked by a single honk, according to court documents.
The incident occurred on October 17th when the victim honked at Benefiel’s vehicle, a mint green Ford SUV, after she failed to move at a green light at the intersection of West 38th Street and Georgetown Road. A probable cause affidavit reveals that Benefiel then followed the victim and his girlfriend, firing one shot into their car as they attempted to turn into Georgetown Plaza. The bullet struck the victim in the torso, fatally wounding him. He was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Health shortly after.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed shock at the senselessness of the crime, noting that the incident was unusual due to the minimal provocation. “We see a lot of road rage incidents in the city, but this one is distinguishable because of a single honk of the horn,” Mears told IndyStar. “This just illustrates a complete senselessness.”
Benefiel, who has no prior criminal record, was apprehended the same day thanks to license plate reader technology. Mears praised the technology’s role in the swift arrest but lamented the difficulty in preventing such an act. “It speaks to the violence we face,” he stated, emphasizing the lack of prior interaction between the suspect and victim.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey released a statement calling the death “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” highlighting the tragic consequences of anger and violence. He commended the officers for their quick work in identifying and arresting the suspect.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim’s girlfriend told police that Benefiel was “yelling, screaming, and throwing her hands around while inside the vehicle.” After the shooting, the girlfriend drove the victim to an address on Donald Avenue, less than half a mile away.
License plate readers identified the suspect’s vehicle, leading detectives to Benefiel through BMV records. Undercover officers tracked the vehicle to a gas station, where they observed individuals removing stickers from the rear windshield. A search warrant of Benefiel’s residence led to the discovery of a .40 caliber Glock handgun, found in a purse. Benefiel declined to comment when interviewed by detectives. Her initial hearing is scheduled for October 21st.
