Coast Guard Rescues Family Stranded on Island After Boat Fire Off Cape Cod
WOODS HOLE, MA – A family of three was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Wednesday after being stranded for almost two days on Naushon Island, off the coast of Cape Cod. The family’s 30-foot pleasure boat caught fire, forcing them to abandon ship and swim to the island, part of the Elizabeth Islands chain.
According to the Coast Guard, a relative contacted authorities when the family failed to return as expected on Tuesday. A search was initiated involving the Coast Guard, Falmouth police, and the Falmouth Harbormaster. Calls to the family went unanswered.
On Wednesday, in a stroke of luck, the family’s son was able to use the boat’s marine radio, which had washed ashore, to make a mayday call to the Coast Guard.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew was dispatched and rescued the family from Naushon Island, airlifting them to a local hospital.
“Quick thinking and having quality equipment allowed the family to survive and call for help,” said Scott Backholm, a search and rescue mission coordinator from Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England.
The Coast Guard stated that the family had intended to anchor between Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard throughout the weekend before returning Tuesday afternoon. The family was awakened by the fire.
Hyannis Fire Department officials told Boston 25 News that one family member was in critical condition upon arrival at Cape Cod Hospital, while the other two were in stable condition. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
