PINSON, Ala. – Kimber Mills, an 18-year-old high school cheerleader, has died after being shot at a party early Sunday morning in Pinson, Alabama. The shooting occurred in a wooded area known as “The Pit,” according to authorities.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports that 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead allegedly arrived at the bonfire party around 12:24 a.m. and fired his gun multiple times following a verbal and physical altercation. Whitehead is currently charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held on a $180,000 bond.

According to Ashley Mills, Kimber’s sister, Whitehead was not known to anyone at the party and initiated a confrontation after approaching one of Kimber’s friends. Kimber was reportedly caught in the crossfire.

Kimber Mills was a senior at Cleveland High School, where she was a cheerleader and track athlete. She had plans to attend the University of Alabama in 2026 with the goal of becoming a nurse.

Ashley Mills announced her sister’s passing on Facebook, stating, “Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord at 7:08 p.m. last night! She has had the biggest gathering for honor walk the doc has ever seen! She was and is so loved by so many. We will miss you Kimber!” An honor walk was held for Kimber on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities confirmed that three other individuals were injured in the shooting. According to Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush, Kimber was shot in the head and leg and taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Rylie Cirbo, a friend of Kimber’s, told Fox News Digital, “I’d much rather her be known for her sunshine personality and big smile rather than the tragedy. She seemed like a very bright light in so many lives.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
