Wed Oct 22 12:07:56 UTC 2025: Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan Collapses, Putin Meeting Called Off

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Plans for a highly anticipated meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, slated for Budapest in the coming weeks, have fallen apart after Trump proposed a controversial “freeze” to the Russia-Ukraine war. The proposal, which would have seen a ceasefire along current front lines, was reportedly rejected by Russia, leading to the cancellation of the summit.

Trump himself confirmed the setback on Tuesday, stating he didn’t want a “wasted meeting.” This development comes just two months after a previous summit between the two leaders in Alaska also failed to yield any progress in ending the 42-month-long conflict.

During his presidential campaign, Trump claimed he could resolve the war in just “24 hours.” However, more than a year into his term, he is facing increasing frustration. The proposed ceasefire would have effectively ceded control of approximately 78% of the Donbas region, currently held by Russia, with the future of the territory to be negotiated later.

While European leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, initially expressed support for Trump’s proposal as a starting point for negotiations, they also accused Putin of stalling the peace process. These leaders pledged to increase economic pressure on Russia until Putin is ready to negotiate in good faith.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s hardline position, demanding complete Ukrainian disarmament and control of territories already seized. A private communique from Russia to the US also surfaced, demanding control of the entire Donbas region. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov further stated that Moscow would only agree to end the war after Ukraine is disarmed and territories are ceded.

Trump’s approach to the conflict has been marked by inconsistency. He has, at times, threatened Russia with sanctions and tariffs, while at other times seemingly pressuring Zelenskyy to accept a deal that includes territorial concessions.

The collapse of the planned summit leaves the future of the conflict highly uncertain. Zelenskyy recently visited the White House to request more advanced weaponry, including Tomahawk missiles, but did not secure the agreement. The Ukrainian President has also been urging increased military support, with Trump suggesting that European NATO allies should take on a more significant role.
