California Braces for Potential CalFresh Benefit Delays Due to Federal Shutdown
SACRAMENTO, CA – Millions of Californians who rely on CalFresh food assistance are facing potential delays in receiving their benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today. The delays, triggered by the Trump administration’s shutdown, could begin as early as November if the government is not reopened or funding is not secured by October 23rd.
The California Department of Social Services has already begun notifying counties to prepare for the potential impact, which could affect roughly 5.5 million Californians. These critical food benefits are primarily federally funded, and recipients will be notified as early as this week about the potential delays. Some state-funded food benefits could also be impacted.
Governor Newsom sharply criticized the shutdown, stating, “Trump’s failure to open the federal government is now endangering people’s lives and making basic needs like food more expensive – just as the holidays arrive.” He urged Congressional Republicans to stand up to President Trump and end the shutdown.
With Thanksgiving approaching, the potential for food insecurity is particularly concerning, potentially placing additional strain on local food banks. First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, stating, “Parents and caregivers should not be forced to choose between buying groceries or paying bills.”
The federal government has instructed states to withhold benefit data for November, which impacts both new CalFresh enrollees in the latter half of October and all recipients if the shutdown continues.
California is preparing contingency plans, including fast-tracking up to $80 million in state funds and deploying the California National Guard and California Volunteers to support food banks.
