‘The Diplomat’ Season 3 Explodes Premise with Unexpected Power Shifts, Leaving Kate Wyler at a Crossroads
LOS ANGELES, CA – The third season of Netflix’s political thriller, “The Diplomat,” has arrived, and it’s already shaking things up in a major way. In the first two episodes, a cascade of events, including a presidential death, a new president, and a shocking vice presidential appointment, has left Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) grappling with her future and challenging the established dynamics of the show.
Following the death of President Rayburn (Michael McKean), Grace Penn (Allison Janney) ascends to the presidency and, in a surprising move, appoints Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), Kate’s estranged husband and former ambassador, as her vice president, rather than Kate, who has been diligently working towards the position. This decision prompts Kate to reconsider her role as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K.
In a powerful moment, Kate decides against returning to the U.S. with Hal, choosing instead to remain in London and continue her work. Russell explains that Kate’s decision represents a significant moment of self-determination, a break from the pattern of prioritizing Hal’s career over her own.
Showrunner Debora Cahn acknowledged the real-world parallels of a highly qualified woman being passed over for a top job and expressed that the plot twist allows for even more twists as the old threads may unravel. Sewell welcomed the dramatic shift in dynamics, stating it “throws so much in the air” and creates new, intriguing problems.
All three seasons of “The Diplomat” are now streaming on Netflix.
