Tue Oct 21 19:20:45 UTC 2025: ## Deepavali Celebrations Marred by Surge in Emergency Cases in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI, October 22, 2025 – Deepavali festivities in Tamil Nadu were overshadowed by a significant increase in emergency cases, according to data released by the 108 emergency response network. The network handled a total of 7,463 cases on Deepavali, a 48% jump compared to the daily average of 5,051.
The most alarming increase was seen in fire/burn injuries, which surged by a staggering 904% from the daily average of 26 cases to 261 on Deepavali. Assault cases also more than quadrupled, rising to 808 compared to the usual 197. Vehicular trauma emergencies tripled, with 2,578 cases reported on Deepavali compared to the regular 835.
In Chennai, the 108 ambulance network responded to 351 emergencies, a slight increase from 331 last year. The top 10 ambulance hotspots in the city included Maduravoyal, the Koyambedu bus stand, and Anna Salai.
Hospitals across the state also reported a rise in patients seeking treatment for Deepavali-related injuries. Dr. M. Kavitha, Dean of Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, stated that the hospital admitted 12 cases to its special burns ward over the festival period, with children being the majority of patients. “Most of the patients have burn injuries on the face and the hands,” Dr. Kavitha cautioned, urging adults to supervise children closely and prevent them from re-igniting used firecrackers.
Sankara Nethralaya, a leading eye hospital, treated 25 patients with cracker-related eye injuries. While most were treated as outpatients, two required corneal wound exploration surgery.
The surge in emergency cases highlights the need for increased safety awareness and precautions during Deepavali celebrations. Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution while handling firecrackers and to prioritize road safety to minimize accidents.
