Tiruchi Grapples with Flooding After Heavy Rainfall Exposes Drainage System Failures

TIRUCHI, October 22, 2025 – Recent heavy rainfall has overwhelmed Tiruchi’s stormwater drainage system, leading to widespread flooding and disruption across the city. The downpour, which saw Tiruchi town receiving 56mm of rain on Tuesday, has revealed significant inadequacies in the city’s infrastructure, leaving residents wading through flooded streets.

Key roads like Bharathidasan Salai, Major Saravanan Road, and Thillai Nagar Main Road are among the worst affected, with stagnant water disrupting traffic and stranding vehicles. Low-lying residential areas, particularly near the airport in K.K. Nagar, J.K. Nagar, and Karumandapam, are also struggling to cope with the excess water.

Residents point to clogged drains, filled with silt and plastic waste, as a major contributing factor. The buildup prevents rainwater from properly draining, leading to the current crisis. Concerns are also mounting regarding the health risks associated with stagnant water, which residents fear will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Tiruchi Corporation has stated that annual desilting of major stormwater drains was completed prior to the monsoon season. “Manual removal of slits and solid wastes, including plastics, is being carried out at low-lying areas and along major roads… Major channels are also being checked to ensure the free flow of water,” said a senior Corporation official.

The Corporation is also undertaking the construction of 8.5 km of new stormwater drains in wards 55-60 at a cost of ₹71.92 crore. Faulty drains are being renovated, and new drains are being built in a phased manner.

The current flooding highlights the urgent need for continued investment and maintenance of Tiruchi’s drainage infrastructure to mitigate the impact of future heavy rainfall events. The Hindu will continue to provide updates on this developing situation.
