Wed Oct 22 09:00:00 UTC 2025: Netflix Bets Big on ‘Catan’ With Multi-Project Adaptation Deal

LOS ANGELES, CA – Netflix is expanding its gaming-inspired content with a major deal to develop multiple projects based on the globally popular board game “Catan.” The streaming giant has secured the global rights to the game, with plans to create films, scripted and unscripted TV series, and animated content.

“Catan,” originally released as “The Settlers of Catan” in 1995 by Klaus Teuber, has become a cultural phenomenon, selling over 45 million copies worldwide and translated into over 40 languages. The game challenges players to settle the island of Catan, strategically acquiring resources and building settlements to earn victory points.

The projects will be produced by a team including Darren Kyman from game publisher Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studios (an Asmodee studio), and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, the sons of the game’s inventor, Klaus Teuber. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment will also serve as a producer.

“When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced ‘Catan’ thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together – both at the table and beyond it,” said Benjamin and Guido Teuber, co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, in a statement.

This move follows Netflix’s successful foray into adapting games into hit shows, including the animated series “Arcane” (based on “League of Legends”) and “Castlevania.” The streamer also recently announced a series adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed” and a “Monopoly” reality competition series.

“Anyone who has played ‘Catan’ knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, head of scripted series, US and Canada, for Netflix. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”

The deal signifies the continued growth and cultural relevance of board games and Netflix’s investment in diverse forms of entertainment. The possibilities for storytelling within the “Catan” universe are endless. Fans both old and new are excited to see how the game will translate to a visual medium.
