Former French President Sarkozy Imprisoned for Campaign Finance Conspiracy
Paris – October 21, 2025 – Nicolas Sarkozy, the former President of France, began serving a five-year prison sentence today at La Sante prison in Paris. His conviction stems from a criminal conspiracy to illegally finance his successful 2007 election campaign with funds from Libya. He is the first former French leader in modern history to be imprisoned.
Surrounded by supporters chanting his name and singing the French anthem, Sarkozy, accompanied by his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and members of his family, entered the prison earlier today. Before entering prison, Sarkozy stated on social media that he was an “innocent man” being incarcerated and vowed to fight the conviction and his incarceration pending appeal.
The court ruled Sarkozy must begin his sentence immediately due to the gravity of the offense and its impact on public order. His lawyers have stated that a request for release will be filed promptly and that the former President is prepared for solitary confinement, which he will be subject to for security reasons. His lawyer, Christophe Ingrain said incarceration “strengthens his determination, it strengthens his rage to prove that he is innocent.”
President Emmanuel Macron hosted Sarkozy at the presidential palace last week, saying that as it was “normal on a human level to receive one of my predecessors in this context,” while maintaining the independence of the judiciary.
According to his lawyers, Sarkozy has packed a bag with clothes, earplugs, and the maximum allowable three books, including Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo.”
