Flooding Shuts Down Tourist Hotspot in Erode as Dam Reaches Capacity
ERODE, TAMIL NADU – October 21, 2025 – The Kodiveri anicut, a popular tourist destination in Erode district, has been closed to the public following flooding along the Bhavani River. The closure comes as the Bhavanisagar Dam reached a water level of 102 feet, triggering the release of surplus water.
Officials began releasing 8,500 cusecs of water from the dam early Tuesday morning as the water level matched the permissible storage capacity for the month of October. With inflow recorded at 9,500 cusecs, storage is nearing its full capacity. While water continues to be discharged into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal, no water has been released into the Kalingarayan canal or the Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals.
The Water Resources Department has issued a flood warning to residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas, particularly in light of anticipated heavy inflow due to the approaching Northeast monsoon. Residents are being urged to move to safer locations, and authorities are implementing precautionary measures to protect lives and property.
The Kodiveri anicut, known for attracting tourists from across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, is located 15 km from Gobichettipalayam on the Sathyamangalam Road. Bathing has been prohibited at the site due to the increased water levels. Officials have not indicated when the anicut will reopen to the public.
