Former NFL Star Doug Martin Dies After Police Custody Incident
Oakland, CA – Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, 36, died Saturday morning in Oakland after being taken into custody by police, officials confirmed Monday.
According to police, Martin was involved in a break-in early Saturday. While attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred, and Martin became unresponsive shortly after being arrested. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Martin’s agent, Brian Murphy, released a statement Monday night, revealing that the former NFL star had been battling mental health issues. “Privately, Doug battled mental health challenges that profoundly impacted his personal and professional life,” Murphy stated. “Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run.”
The statement further clarified that Martin’s parents had been actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support before the incident. Overwhelmed and disoriented, Martin reportedly fled his home in the middle of the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was apprehended by police. An investigation is currently underway into the circumstances surrounding his death while in police custody.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin’s primary team for six seasons, released a statement expressing their condolences: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.” The Las Vegas Raiders and Boise State University also released statements mourning his passing.
Martin was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2012 as the 31st overall pick. He quickly became a fan favorite, known for his explosive running style and earning the nickname “Muscle Hamster.” He amassed 1,454 rushing yards and 12 total touchdowns in his rookie season. While injuries hampered portions of his career, he had another strong 1,400-yard season in 2015. He played one season with the Oakland Raiders before retiring in 2018. In his NFL career, Martin accumulated 5,356 rushing yards and 32 total touchdowns. He also starred in Boise State, where he had 3,431 rushing yards, which still ranks in the top-10 all-time.
