Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has launched a scathing critique of LaLiga’s plan to hold a regular-season match in Miami, arguing that it fundamentally compromises the integrity of the competition. His comments come amidst growing discontent among players, who recently protested the move due to a perceived lack of transparency in the decision-making process.

The contentious match, slated for December 20th at Hard Rock Stadium, would pit Villarreal against Barcelona. While LaLiga President Javier Tebas champions the move as crucial for long-term revenue growth, Courtois sees it as unfair and a violation of the player’s agreement.

“It totally affects the integrity of the competition,” Courtois stated at a press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League match. He contrasted the situation with the NBA and NFL, arguing that their overseas games have less impact due to the volume of games played or require full team owner approval. “Here in LaLiga, they do whatever they want. It breaches the players’ agreement. It isn’t right. You have to play home and away.”

Courtois also criticized the league’s response to the player protests, where television broadcasts reportedly cut away from the stadium during the planned 15-second pauses in play. “Hiding [the protests] is censorship and manipulation,” he asserted, adding that he was not surprised by the move, referencing previous controversial statements made by Tebas. “That’s serious.”

Real Madrid has been actively trying to block the game from happening, appealing to UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation, and the Sports Ministry. While coach Xabi Alonso declined to comment directly, he acknowledged that the club is “legitimately defending its interests.”

The proposed Miami game represents LaLiga’s latest attempt to tap into the lucrative North American market. However, the strong pushback from players and Real Madrid underscores the growing divide over the league’s ambitions and the potential impact on the fairness and integrity of Spanish football.
