Former NFL Star Doug Martin Dies in Police Custody After Oakland Break-In
Oakland, CA – Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, 35, died early Saturday morning while in Oakland Police custody following an incident at a residential home. Police responded to a report of a break-in at approximately 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, encountering Martin at the scene.
According to a statement from the Oakland Police Department (OPD), Martin was involved in a break-in at a neighbor’s residence. As officers attempted to detain him, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics were called to the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Athletes First, the agency that formerly represented Martin, released a statement Monday night revealing that the former NFL star had battled mental health challenges that had significantly impacted his life. The agency also stated that Martin’s family is seeking clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
“Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support,” the statement read. “Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police.”
An investigation into the events that occurred during Martin’s detention is currently underway. The OPD has stated that, in accordance with department policy, the in-custody death is being investigated by multiple entities, including the Homicide Section, OPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Martin spent six of his seven NFL seasons, issued a statement calling him a “fan favorite” who left a “lasting impact” on the franchise. He was named one of the top 50 players in franchise history during its 50-year anniversary celebration.
Known as the “Muscle Hamster” for his powerful running style, Martin amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns during his NFL career. The Boise State University standout was drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round (31st overall) in 2012. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie year, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season came in 2015 when he earned All-Pro honors with 1,402 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
Martin concluded his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. He remains a top-ten rusher in Boise State history.
The investigation into Martin’s death is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
