Russia Claims Gains in Eastern Ukraine Amidst Escalating Conflict

Moscow – October 17, 2025 – Russian forces announced today they have captured three villages – Pishchane and Tykhe in the Kharkiv region and Pryvillia in the Dnipropetrovsk region – marking a significant, albeit incremental, advance in their ongoing offensive in eastern Ukraine. These gains include areas previously reclaimed by Ukrainian forces during a counter-offensive in the autumn of 2022.

The Russian military command stated that the villages were taken after intense fighting. The battle for control of these small, largely devastated settlements underscores the costly nature of the war, which has been raging since February 2022.

The advance comes as Russian forces attempt to encircle Kupiansk, a crucial logistics hub and a major gain for Ukraine during its 2022 counter-offensive. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.

Both sides traded accusations of targeting civilian areas. According to Moscow-installed officials in the occupied Kherson region, Ukrainian shelling resulted in the deaths of two adults and a child. Meanwhile, Kyiv reported that Russian shelling in the Ukrainian-held part of the region killed one person and wounded 14.

Overnight, Russia reported intercepting 61 Ukrainian drones, primarily in western regions and the occupied Crimea peninsula. Kyiv has not yet commented on this.

Despite the ongoing conflict, there is a glimmer of hope for de-escalation. Following a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, both leaders have agreed to hold a new summit, the details of which are yet to be announced.
