Afghanistan and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes
Doha, Qatar – Following a week of intense fighting along their disputed border, Afghanistan and Pakistan have reached an agreement for an immediate ceasefire. The breakthrough came after talks mediated by Qatar and Turkiye in Doha, Qatar.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the agreement early Sunday, stating it includes “the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries.” Follow-up meetings are scheduled in the coming days to ensure the ceasefire’s sustainability and proper implementation.
The recent clashes, which resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries, marked the worst violence between the two South Asian neighbors since the Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021. Tensions escalated after Pakistan accused Afghanistan of harboring rebels responsible for cross-border attacks. Islamabad demanded that Kabul rein in these fighters, who they claim operate from safe havens within Afghanistan.
The Taliban has denied providing sanctuary to armed groups, accusing the Pakistani military of spreading misinformation and sheltering ISIL (ISIS)-linked fighters who undermine Afghanistan’s stability.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on immediate measures to end cross-border terrorism against Pakistan emanating from Afghanistan and restore peace and stability along the Pak-Afghan border.
